Located right at the heart of a sprawling metropolis, lies a lush and well- naintained golf turf, the vast expanse of the turf is fotted with trees, water bodies and dramatic undulations and lets you relax and unwind at a surreal setting as you see away. Colombo Royal Golf Club  history dates to the establishment of the game of golf in Sri Lanka,  and over a century of sport and sporting traditions , customs , manners, and styles of the British in Ceylon . A fragment of it is to be seen in the founding of the Colombo Golf Club and its life thereafter as the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

In 1879 , a handful of intrepid British expatriates decided that it was time to introduce Golf to a small British colony called Ceylon. The British were recognized for their skills in organized sports, and it inevitably , polo, Cricket , Football, hockey , and rugby were initially introduced on Galle Face Green. It was there, sharing with cricket and rugby enthusiasts on Galle Face Green, that the Royal Glof club was inagurated without  clubhouse or a proper Golf course.

After the first year of being inagurated , nine gentlemen met and decided it was time to elect a commitee and create a set of rules to handle the affairs of the club . On the saturday afternoon of March 13th  1880, they met at the Colombo Club and held the first Annual General Meeting . Membership was growing fast , and Galle Face Green was becoming more and more crowded,  what with sharing the ground with other sports enthusiasts and the public. Edward Aitken took the chair and R.L.M. Brown was the first Honorary secretary. The first Charman and Captain were W . Law and the committee consisted of W .Somerville. F.A.Fairlie and R.webster.

The first competitive tourbament at the golf club took place in 1887 . Owing to the Club’s professional practise and tournaments it hosts , in 1888 the Cslcutta Golf Club offers a silver medal to the club the Medal today is still contested at the club and the challenge is hosted annually.

Being moved to several locations around the city . The golf course properly constructed where it is situated today and was opened in july 1896 by Governor joseph West Ridgeway. The Ridgeway Links were named after him king George V in the year 1928, approved the club as Royal charter and this enabled the use of prefix “Royal” in front of its name hence , the name of the club was changed as the Royal Colombo Golf Club . During the time it was established the membership was  limited only for European and British members, however, in 1936 the Club allowed the Ceylonese to get enrolled as member of the club . The Club also played a significant role in helping the allied forces duting World War ll. During this period the clubhouse and the turfs were used by the Royal Navy, numerous temporary stations were built in the midst of the golf links by skilled code breakers of the Far East Combined Bureau which was known as HMS Anderson.

Having a proud legacy that has colonial routes the golf club today dazzles as a popular destination in Colombo where you could indulge in a relaxing play experince .
